Indications for the EPITACT® bunion splint
Are joint pains related to your bunion disturbing your sleep? Enjoy more peaceful nights with the EPITACT® night splint.
The night bunion splint has a triple action:
- it corrects the deformity and limits the progression of the bunion ;
- it relieves nighttime joint pain ;
- it eliminates conflicting pain on the "bunion" caused by pressure and friction against sheets, the mattress, etc. ;
Thermoformable, this splint allows for a progressive and personalized correction of your bunion. By perfectly adjusting to your morphology, it is very comfortable and is forgotten during sleep.
Effectiveness tests of the night bunion orthosis
After 1 month of using the bunion splint, more than 9 out of 10 have observed a realignment of their big toe. Their joint pain and friction have decreased by about 30 %(1).
(1)Study conducted in July 2015 by Podyconcept with 15 participants with a bunion.
Usage tips
- Check that your toe is still laterally mobile (mild to moderate stage).
- Wash and thermoform the splint before the first use.
- Do not use while walking.
- During the first 3 uses, it is recommended to wear the splint for only 2 hours.
- For subsequent uses, wear the splint all night. Joint pain may be felt during the first uses. If it persists beyond 7 nights, consult your podiatrist.
- After 1 month of wearing the splint and in the absence of pain, a second thermoforming to increase the correction may be implemented. The desired correction will then be achieved without the spacer, but by pulling laterally on the big toe.
- The device must be worn daily to achieve optimal effectiveness.
How to thermoform the night bunion orthosis?
Thermoforming involves adapting the shape of the reinforcement of the night bunion splint to your morphology. It can be renewed 4 to 5 times to increase the degree of correction. It is done at home in just a few minutes.
Contraindications for the night bunion splint
- Do not use the splint on a skin lesion.
- Do not use if the big toe is no longer laterally mobile.
- In cases of individuals with diabetes, arteritis, polyneuropathy, lower limb neuropathy, or varicose ulcers: consult your doctor or podiatrist, then monitor your foot during use.

How to maintain your splint?
The night bunion splint is machine washable at 30°C or by hand (without scrubbing) with water and soap. Let it dry naturally. Do not expose to heat (> 50°C). No dry cleaning. Discard and replace the device as soon as cracks appear in the gel or degradation of the fabric or seams.
Frequently asked questions
Can a bunion splint be worn during the day?
It is not recommended to use the bunion splint during the day as its rigid reinforcement is not easily compatible with wearing "standard" shoes and the need to move around. For this reason, EPITACT® has also developed a soft bunion orthosis, compatible with wearing shoes and walking.
How to choose the right size?
Using a measuring tape, measure the circumference of your foot just before the "bunion". Then refer to the size guide available at the bottom of the page. If you are unsure between two sizes, prefer the smaller one.
Can the splint cause pain?
In the case of a bunion, straightening the big toe may require an adjustment period. It is recommended to wear the splint for a gradually increasing duration during the first uses. Additionally, the degree of correction should be gradual and moderate to avoid causing joint pain. If the thermoforming was poorly done, it can be renewed several times. If you feel the need, consult a podiatrist.
