Indications for the EPITACT® night hallux valgus splint
Are joint pains related to your hallux valgus disturbing your sleep? Enjoy more peaceful nights thanks to the EPITACT® night splint.
The night hallux valgus splint has a triple action:
- it corrects the deformity and limits the progression of hallux valgus;
- it relieves nighttime joint pain;
- it eliminates painful pressure on the "bunion" caused by rubbing and pressure against sheets, mattress, etc.;
Thermoformable, this splint allows a progressive and personalized correction of your hallux valgus. By perfectly adapting to your morphology, it is very comfortable and can be forgotten during sleep.
Effectiveness tests of the night hallux valgus orthosis
After 1 month of using the hallux valgus splint, more than 9 out of 10 people observed a realignment of their big toe. Their joint and friction pain decreased by about 30%(1).
(1)Study conducted in July 2015 by Podyconcept with 15 participants with hallux valgus.
Usage advice
- Check that your toe is still laterally mobile (mild to moderate stage).
- Wash and thermoform the splint before first use.
- Do not use while walking.
- For the first 3 uses, it is recommended to wear the splint for only 2 hours.
- For subsequent uses, wear the splint all night. Joint pain may be felt during the first uses. If it persists beyond 7 nights, consult your podiatrist.
- After 1 month of wearing the splint and if no pain occurs, a second thermoforming to increase correction can be done. The desired correction will then be achieved without the spacer, by pulling the big toe laterally.
- The device must be worn daily for optimal effectiveness.
How to thermoform the night hallux valgus orthosis?
Thermoforming consists of adapting the shape of the reinforcement of the night hallux valgus splint to your morphology. It can be repeated 4 to 5 times to increase the degree of correction. It can be done at home in just a few minutes.
Contraindications for the night hallux valgus splint
- Do not use the splint on a skin lesion.
- Do not use if the big toe is no longer laterally mobile.
- For people with diabetes, arteritis, polyneuropathy, lower limb neuropathy, or varicose ulcers: consult your doctor or podiatrist, then monitor your foot during use.

How to care for your splint?
The night hallux valgus splint is machine washable at 30°C or hand washable (without rubbing) with water and soap. Let dry naturally. Do not expose to heat (> 50°C). No dry cleaning. Discard and replace the device as soon as cracks appear in the gel or if the fabric or seams degrade.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can the hallux valgus splint be worn during the day?
It is not recommended to use the hallux valgus splint during the day because its rigid reinforcement is hardly compatible with wearing "standard" shoes and the need to move around. For this reason, EPITACT® has also developed a flexible hallux valgus orthosis compatible with wearing shoes and walking.
How to choose the right size?
Using a tape measure, measure the circumference of your foot just before the "bunion." Then refer to the size guide available at the bottom of the page. If you hesitate between two sizes, choose the smaller one.
Can the splint cause pain?
In case of hallux valgus, straightening the big toe may require an adaptation period. It is recommended to wear the splint progressively during the first uses. Also, the degree of correction should be gradual and moderate to avoid joint pain. If thermoforming was poorly done, it can be repeated several times. If needed, consult a podiatrist.
